Exploring possible opportunities for community outreach
DEBORAH GROUP VISITS CARITAS COMMUNITY
Members of the Deborah Group, in conjunction with our current study of A Second Resurrection: Leading Your Congregation to New Life, visited the Caritas Community, in the Binghampton area, on Saturday, July 12 for lunch and exploring possible opportunities for community outreach.
The Caritas Community offers a safe gathering place for residents of the neighborhood, with a focus on offerings for children, including help with homework, reading, art and drama activities and games. In addition, the community center houses support groups, sponsors a community garden, and offers a neighborhood café and coffee bar.
Some of the questions that we’ve been wrestling with and praying about, in our study sessions since January, include:
Does your church exist primarily for those not yet part of it?
Is your church more focused on those outside the church than in it? If not, why?
Whose disciples are we? By definition, as Christians, we are disciples of Jesus,
and should model Jesus by being on the road to mission with him.
Our visit to the Caritas Community was a first step in exploring ways that our group can reach out and serve others in Jesus’ name. Watch for more information about future volunteer opportunities, and if you’re interested in learning more, why not join us at our next meeting, on Thursday evening, August 14 in the Conference Room, beginning with brown-bag supper at 6:30 P.M. and conversation/study following at 7.
